Best Spring Break Destinations for Families (2027): Where to Go by Age and by Week

The best spring break destinations for families in 2027, by kid age and by week, with real March water temps and how to dodge the crowds.

Spring break isn't really a week. In 2027, it stretches across about seven weeks, from the first week of March to the end of April.

Every family thinks they're going "at spring break," but they're all going at different times. That's the secret to doing it well. Three things decide whether your trip is great or just crowded and expensive:

  • Your week. Some weeks are packed and some are surprisingly quiet. Easter is early in 2027 (March 28), so the worst crowds land in late March.
  • Your kids' ages. A trip that's perfect for a 10-year-old can be miserable with a 2-year-old.
  • The water. Most US beaches are colder in March than parents expect. Only a few places are warm enough for a real swim.

Here's how to pick spring break destinations for families with all three in mind.

Pick your trip in four questions

If you only have two minutes, start here.

  1. When is your week? Early March and late April are the easiest weeks. Late March is the hardest in 2027.
  2. How old is your youngest? Under 4, keep it short and simple: one place, one pool, no connecting flights. From about 8, the big national parks open up.
  3. Do you need to swim in the ocean? If yes, go to South Florida, the Keys, or Hawaii. Everywhere else, plan on a heated pool.
  4. Drive or fly? Spring break airfare is high. If you can drive, you'll save the most money right there.

The rest of the decisions get much easier once you've answered those four.

When is spring break 2027? (It's seven weeks, not one)

Your kids' school picks your week. Everyone else's school picks the crowds. Here's when some of the biggest districts are off in 2027:

DatesWho's off
March 8-12Houston
March 15-19Orlando (Orange County), Austin
March 22-26Chicago, Los Angeles, and Mexico's national school break (through early April)
March 28Easter Sunday
April 19-23Boston
April 22-30New York City

Your own district may be different, so check its calendar. But every year works the same way: breaks are spread out, and they bunch up around Easter.

The Easter rule. The week before Easter is usually the busiest week of the whole season. The week after is usually a little calmer. Calmer isn't the same as quiet, but it helps.

Why 2027 is different. Easter falls on March 28, which is early. That puts the Easter rush in late March, in the same week that Chicago and Los Angeles are off. Mexico's schools are off from March 22 into early April too, so beach towns in Mexico will have plenty of company that week.

How to use this. If your break is in early March or late April, you're lucky. You'll be traveling while most other families are at school and work. If your break is in late March, book early and lean toward quieter places.

And if your kids aren't in school yet, you can skip spring break completely. More on that below.

Warm spring break destinations for families: where you can actually swim

This is the part most spring break lists leave out. In March, most US beaches are cold.

The table below shows average sea temperatures. Around 70°F is where most kids happily stay in the water. Below that, expect a lot of squealing and a fast retreat to the pool.

Rounded long-term averages from NOAA coastal water data, checked against a second sea-temperature source. Any single week can run warmer or colder.

The takeaway is simple: for a March swimming trip, go south. South Florida, the Keys, and Hawaii are the safe bets.

The Florida Panhandle, the Alabama coast, and Texas are lovely in March. The sand is just as nice. The water is in the 60s, though, so plan on the heated pool. By April, almost the whole Gulf Coast warms into the low 70s, and the beach trip gets a lot easier.

San Diego is a great spring break city. It just isn't a swim trip in March. Go for the zoo and the parks, and bring a hoodie for the beach.

Some kids from cold states will happily splash in 65-degree water. Toddlers usually won't. Know your crew.

Best spring break destinations for families with babies and toddlers

Start with the best advice of all: if your kids aren't in school yet, don't travel at spring break.

You're not tied to a school calendar, so use that. Go in late February or early March, before most breaks start. Or go in May, after almost everyone is back in class. You'll pay less, wait less, and get a pool that isn't wall-to-wall cannonballs.

Parents of little ones say this again and again. The trips that felt easy were the ones outside school breaks.

If an older sibling's school locks you in, here's what works with babies and toddlers.

A warm beach with a direct flight

South Florida, the Keys, and Hawaii have water warm enough to swim. Pick a place you can reach with a direct flight from your home airport if you can. A connection with a toddler turns a travel day into a long, loud ordeal. Hawaii is a long flight from most of the mainland, so it makes the most sense for families on the West Coast.

A resort with a shallow pool

With toddlers, the pool matters more than the beach. Look for a zero-entry pool, which slopes in gently like a beach, and a small splash area. A kids' club is a bonus, but check the age rules first, because many start at age 4. The kid-friendly all-inclusive guide covers which resorts take younger kids.

Disney, done gently

Walt Disney World can work with toddlers, and kids under 3 get in free. Keep the trip to a week or less. Plan short park mornings with a nap back at the hotel, then head out again after dinner if everyone's still smiling. Parents who did it this way say it felt easy. Parents who tried full park days usually didn't. Stay away from the weeks around Easter. Orlando with kids has the full plan.

Washington, DC, with a carrier

The cherry blossoms are beautiful, and the Smithsonian museums are free. But the crowds at the Tidal Basin during peak bloom are thick. Bring a baby carrier instead of a stroller, and hold little hands near the water.

Keep the toddler trip small

Whatever you pick, keep it to one base. Packing up a hotel room with a 2-year-old every two days wears everyone out. One place, one pool, and a nap every afternoon is a great spring break at this age.

Best spring break trips for kids 4 to 7

This is the easy age. Kids can walk most of the day, nap less, and actually remember the trip.

Orlando

Disney and Universal are the classic picks for this age. Your week matters more than anything here. In 2027, late March is the crowd peak, so families with an early-March or mid-April break have a real advantage. Orlando with kids covers which parks to do first and how to pace them.

San Diego

The San Diego Zoo, the Safari Park, and LEGOLAND are all in the San Diego area, and the weather is mild most of the year. Just don't plan on ocean swimming in March. Plan on the hotel pool and a hoodie at the beach instead. See San Diego with kids, and for Disneyland, see Anaheim with kids.

A Gulf beach, if your break is in April

The Gulf Coast is a great pick for this age in April, once the water warms up. In March, it's a sand-and-pool trip. That's still fun at 5. Book somewhere with a heated pool, and nobody will mind that the Gulf is chilly.

Texas Hill Country

Families who want something warm without a long flight keep naming the Texas Hill Country and San Antonio. Spring is a good time for it, before the summer heat sets in.

Best spring break trips for kids 8 to 12

This is the golden age for spring break. Kids can hike, handle long days, and get excited about big places. When parents of kids this age talk about their favorite spring break, they usually talk about the desert.

Sedona and the Grand Canyon

This is the trip parents of 8-to-12-year-olds rave about most. Hike the red rocks in the morning, swim in the pool in the afternoon, and give the Grand Canyon a full day. Spring is a good time to go, before the summer heat arrives.

Utah's national parks

Zion, Bryce, and Arches are the other big favorite. Two tips matter most:

  • Zion's main canyon road is shuttle-only from about March through November. You can't drive your own car up the canyon, so plan your day around the shuttle.
  • Get there early. Spring break crowds hit Zion hard. If you're on the trail before 9am, you'll have a much better day.

The Smoky Mountains

Easy hikes, waterfalls, and Gatlinburg's famous pancake houses make the Smokies an easy win for this age. Some park roads close for winter, though. Kuwohi Road, which goes up to the park's highest point, usually opens around April 1.

Washington, DC

Ages 8 to 12 is the sweet spot for Washington, DC with kids. Kids get the history, and the free museums save the day when it rains. The National Cherry Blossom Festival runs from March 20 to April 11, 2027. Peak bloom usually falls between the last week of March and the first week of April, and the National Park Service posts its forecast closer to the date.

Hawaii

The water is warm, and humpback whale season peaks from January through March, so an early-March trip may still catch a few. The flight is long, which is much easier with older kids. Pick one island and stay put. Honolulu with kids is a good place to start.

Skip Yellowstone

Yellowstone is amazing, just not in spring. Most of the park's roads don't open to cars until mid-April, and some stay closed into May. Save it for summer.

Spring break with teens

Teens want adventure, some freedom, and a good wifi signal, in some order.

  • Costa Rica. Zip lines, sloths, volcanoes, and rafting. Spring falls in the dry season, which runs roughly from December to April.
  • Mexico or the Caribbean. Easy, warm, and teens can have a bit of freedom at a resort. In 2027, remember that Mexico's own school break runs from March 22 into early April, so popular beach towns will be busy then.
  • A cruise. Teens love the freedom of a ship, and parents love that dinner is handled.
  • A big city. New York, DC, or Savannah work well for teens who'd rather walk and eat than lie on a beach.
  • A late ski trip. If your break is in March, check your mountain's closing date before you book.

One more piece of good news: the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, so spring is well outside it.

Cheap spring break trips for families

Spring break prices are high almost everywhere, and flights are usually the worst part. Every year, parents say airfare is "through the roof."

Here's how families keep spring break from breaking the bank:

  • Drive instead of fly. A beach town, a lake cabin, or a city within a day's drive skips the most expensive line on the bill.
  • Do a national park road trip. Camp, or stay in small towns near the parks. A motel with a pool turns it into a real vacation.
  • Book a bundle. Big booking sites and warehouse-club travel sites sell flight-and-hotel packages that can cost less than booking each part on its own.
  • Go all-inclusive. It looks expensive at first. But when meals and snacks for four are already paid for, the math often works out.
  • Go a few weeks later. If your schedule allows, travel after spring break. Some families take their "spring break" trip in May.
  • Stay home and plan one big day. Plenty of families do this, and it's a perfectly good year.

How to dodge spring break crowds

You can't make spring break empty, but you can make it a lot easier.

  • Go early in the day. The first couple of hours at any popular spot are the calmest.
  • Go mid-week. Tuesday to Thursday beats the weekend almost everywhere.
  • Pick the quieter twin. Choose the smaller beach town next to the famous one. Same sand, fewer people.
  • Avoid the week before Easter if you have any choice at all.
  • Don't trust "uncrowded" lists. No popular place is quiet during its own region's spring break week.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to take kids for spring break? It depends on their ages and your week. With toddlers, pick a warm beach in South Florida or Hawaii, or a resort with a shallow pool. Ages 4 to 7 do well in Orlando, San Diego, or on a Gulf beach in April. Ages 8 to 12 love Sedona and the Grand Canyon, Utah's national parks, or Washington, DC during the cherry blossoms. Teens like Costa Rica, Mexico or the Caribbean, or a big city.

Where is the cheapest place to go for spring break with kids? Somewhere you can drive to. A beach town, a lake cabin, a state park, or a national park road trip all skip the flights, which are usually the biggest cost. If you do fly, compare bundled flight-and-hotel packages, or look at an all-inclusive so meals are already paid for.

When is spring break 2027? It depends on your school district. In 2027, big districts break anywhere from early March to late April. Houston is off March 8-12. Orlando and Austin are off March 15-19. Chicago and Los Angeles are off March 22-26. Boston is off the week of April 19, and New York City is off April 22-30. Easter is early, on March 28.

Is Disney World worth it during spring break? It can be, if you choose your week. The weeks around Easter are the busiest, and in 2027 that means late March. Pick a quieter week, plan short park days with a midday break, and remember that kids under 3 get in free.

Where is it warm enough to swim in March? South Florida, the Florida Keys, and Hawaii. Average sea temperatures there are in the low to mid 70s in March. The Florida Panhandle, Alabama, and the Texas coast are in the 60s, and San Diego is around 60. For those places, book a hotel with a heated pool.

Is a 3-day spring break trip worth it? Yes, if it's close to home. Pick somewhere within a few hours' drive or one short direct flight, like a beach town, a cabin, or a city you can drive to. Skip anything with a connecting flight or a big time change, because three days isn't enough time to recover from either.

What didn't make the list

Party beaches in March. Some beach towns fill up with college students during their spring break weeks. With kids, pick the quieter town next door.

Yellowstone. It's amazing in summer, but most of it is closed to cars until mid-April.

The Pacific Northwest coast. It's beautiful, but count on rain and a chill in spring. It's great for families who love rain jackets. It isn't a sun trip.

Long-haul trips with little kids. Ten hours on a plane with a toddler is a lot of effort for a one-week break. Save that one for a longer vacation.

For more ideas by age and by month, see the best places to travel with kids. And if your trip involves a plane and a toddler, read flying with a toddler before you pack.

Pick your week. Check the water. Book the pool. That's spring break, sorted.
