Luxury Family Vacations: Where the Extra Money Goes
Compare luxury family vacations in Hawaii, Mexico, Europe and beyond, with practical advice on rooms, childcare, meals and what the extra money actually buys.

Hero photo: Hoodh Ahmed / Unsplash, Dhigurah, Maldives. Destination scenery; the island pictured is not Soneva Fushi.
The children are asleep, the curtains are drawn, and the view you paid extra for has disappeared into the dark. You and your partner would quite like to talk. Unfortunately, the sofa is now a bed, and opening a bag of chips sounds like a demolition project.
A door between the bedroom and living room would be lovely about now.
Luxury family vacations earn their price when they buy something you will use: separate sleeping space, help with meals and childcare, or days together that someone else has organized well.
There is room for the grand adventure, too. A Maldives island or a private safari house can become the holiday everyone talks about for years. Before you book, think beyond the beautiful photograph. A bigger room, a shorter journey or a few afternoons with help may change the week more than the view.
Begin with the part of the holiday you want to change
For a baby or toddler, start with Martinhal Sagres and Ikos Dassia. For separate bedrooms in the US, compare a Hualalai suite with a Palmetto Bluff residence. The deciding details are care ages, meal arrangements and what you want to do between breakfast and bedtime.
- You would like a break with a baby or toddler. Martinhal Sagres in Portugal combines care from six months with houses that have kitchens and laundry. Ikos Dassia on Corfu also has a paid crèche from six months, but its all-inclusive meals remove more of the food planning. At Martinhal, meals and care depend on your booking; Ikos is seasonal, with its next published opening on March 25, 2027.
- You want to stay awake after the children fall asleep. Compare Hualalai’s ‘Ohana Suites in Hawaii with Montage Palmetto Bluff’s two-bedroom Residence 1005 in South Carolina. The first puts pools and cultural activities at the center of the week; the second adds a kitchen and shared living space for a riverside stay. Neither a sofa bed nor a roomy photograph gives you the bedroom door you are paying for.
- You want meals handled without giving up family time. Ikos Dassia offers an all-inclusive beach week. Morukuru Family Madikwe in South Africa pairs a private house and chef with a vehicle and guide for your own party. Choose between the beach and the safari first: having food included does not make these interchangeable holidays.
- You want to do something together, without organizing every outing. The Ranch at Rock Creek in Montana includes two daily activities, from horseback riding to fly fishing, with plans shaped around ages and abilities. Palmetto Bluff offers bike rides and river outings alongside a less scheduled house stay. At the Ranch, the activities are a major part of what you are buying; at Montage, put your chosen excursions into the quote.
Set the journey limit before falling for a property. A Hawaii stay, an Algarve house and a Maldives villa may all solve bedtime beautifully, but that does not make them equally sensible for a short school break.
Bedrooms and childcare, side by side
These are named accommodation examples, not promises that every room at the resort has the same layout. A club’s age range also tells you who may attend, not whether a place is available for your week.
| Place | Space after bedtime | Childcare and the important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Hualalai, Hawaii | ‘Ohana Suite: one or two bedrooms; confirm capacity for the chosen version | Included club, 5–12; younger-child care arranged separately |
| Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina | Residence 1005: two bedrooms, 2½ bathrooms, kitchen and living space | Paid Paintbox, 5–12; published Tuesday–Saturday schedule |
| The Ranch at Rock Creek, Montana | Sweet Grass: two bedrooms, living area and kitchenette; extra beds affect who sleeps where | Included club, 4–12, during activity sessions; extra babysitting is paid |
| Rosewood Mayakoba, Mexico | Deluxe Lagoon Suite: closable bedroom and second bathroom | Paid sitters; published club ages conflict, so obtain written eligibility |
| Martinhal Sagres, Portugal | Ocean House: two or three bedrooms downstairs, kitchen and living room upstairs; washing machine | Care from six months, with separate age groups; fees or inclusions depend on the booking |
| Ikos Dassia, Corfu | Deluxe Two Bedroom Suite: up to six guests; confirm the adult-and-child mix | Included club, 4–12; paid crèche from six months; seasonal operation |
| Soneva Fushi, Maldives | Villa 45: two bedrooms on different floors, private pool and beach access | Den admission included, 4–17; activities may cost extra and babysitting is separate |
| Morukuru Family Madikwe, South Africa | River House: three en-suite bedrooms plus a children’s room; agree on the beds for your party | Agree on the carer, hours and cost; house staff are not a promise of continuous childcare |
Luxury family vacations in the US
Hualalai offers a pool-and-beach holiday, while Palmetto Bluff has family houses beside a river. The Ranch at Rock Creek builds the stay around days outdoors. These are different ways to spend a week, so choose the days you want before comparing room photographs.
Hualalai, Hawaii: pools, culture and a room with breathing space
At Four Seasons Resort Hualalai on Hawaii’s Big Island, the appeal is being able to give the day several different shapes. There is the family-oriented Sea Shell Pool, a separate sand-bottom Keiki pool, and free classes at the Ka‘upulehu Cultural Center. You can spend time together without arranging an outing away from the resort every morning.
For children 5–12, the included Kids For All Seasons program gives the day another option. A child might welcome a morning with new friends, leaving the adults time of their own before everyone meets again. For younger children, ask the concierge to arrange a sitter and confirm the terms before you rely on that care.
The room choice matters as much as the pool choice. An Oceanfront Room lists a king bed and sofa bed for two adults and two children aged 14 or younger. That provides beds for everyone, but no separate bedroom. The ground-floor ‘Ohana Suite comes in one- or two-bedroom configurations with a sofa bed; ask for the floor plan and guest limit for the version you are booking.
There is no need to spend the week proving you have used every facility. A shared activity, lunch and another swim can be plenty, particularly when everyone is still adjusting to the journey. With very young children, choose the room and book the care you need before giving weight to a club they cannot yet attend.
Compare Hualalai’s rooms and suites alongside its family activities and care.
Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina: a house by the river
Montage Palmetto Bluff sits beside the May River in Bluffton, South Carolina. This is a riverside holiday, so arrive wanting the grounds and time outdoors rather than expecting an ocean beach outside the room.
A morning can be as simple as riding bikes beneath the live oaks, then returning for a swim at the Inn Family Pool. For a shared outing, Outside Palmetto Bluff offers guided kayak nature tours through the creeks. Choose the outing with the operator around your children’s ages and confidence on the water, and have its cost included in your holiday quote.
A house gives grandparents and children somewhere to gather between those outings. A kitchen lets you feed an early riser without sending the whole party out, although nobody needs to volunteer for a week of cooking simply because an oven is available.
Be precise about the booking. Signature Residence 1005 has two bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, a kitchen and living space. The Magnolia Cottage Two Bedroom Suite has two bedrooms, two bathrooms and an enclosed Carolina Room, but a wet bar should not be mistaken for a full kitchen. Compare the floor plans: “cottage” and “residence” do not promise the same things.
Paintbox offers supervised half- and full-day sessions for children 5–12. Its published schedule runs Tuesday–Saturday, and sessions cost extra. If you have pictured an afternoon alone, book that session before planning the rest of the day around it.
Palmetto Bluff rewards a family willing to leave some hours unclaimed. Book the meals and outings you care about, then leave room for an afternoon when the house is where everyone wants to be. If everyone wants to spend each day on an ocean beach, choose a stay by the sea instead.
Start with the Palmetto Bluff accommodation choices, then add the cost of the care you intend to book.
The Ranch at Rock Creek, Montana: someone else plans the adventure
An activity holiday can leave one parent with a second job: finding the operator, checking the ages, arranging the equipment and getting everyone there. The Ranch at Rock Creek includes two daily activities and the equipment for its on-property program, which is a substantial part of the reason to choose it.
The activity choices include horseback riding, fly fishing and sapphire mining. Learning something alongside your child gives the day a different pleasure from watching them disappear through a club door. Nobody has to be the family expert before arriving.
Riding may mean an arena lesson or a trail ride, depending on age and ability; a confident older child and a cautious younger sibling need not have identical plans. Choose your outings with the team before arrival, allowing for season and conditions. Fishing also brings license costs for those who need a license, so include those in the quote rather than treating equipment and every permit as the same inclusion.
Flint’s Forest Rangers is included for children 4–12, within the activity sessions. It is not continuous childcare. Extra babysitting has a two-hour minimum and a separate charge, so an evening for the adults still needs its own arrangements.
Meals and premium drinks are included, with exceptions such as reserve-list wines and spirits. The advertised room rate also carries a Ranch Fee, while spa treatments cost extra. Ask for the complete bill before comparing it with a resort where meals and activities are paid separately.
For shared space, Sweet Grass is a year-round cabin with two bedrooms, a living area and a kitchenette. It lists up to seven guests, using additional daybed/pull-out sleeping arrangements; have the ranch spell out who sleeps where.
Choose this trip because your family wants the activities, not because you feel obliged to become an outdoor family for the week. If slow mornings and pool time are the main reason for going, you may not use enough of the program to justify its cost.
Read the ranch’s inclusions and exclusions before requesting a family quote.

Mexico, Europe and family holidays farther afield
Martinhal Sagres offers care for younger children, Ikos Dassia combines a beach stay with all-inclusive dining, and Soneva Fushi adds an onward island journey. Rosewood Mayakoba and Morukuru Madikwe offer two very different versions of a spacious, well-supported stay. Give the journey and the room as much thought as the place.
Rosewood Mayakoba, Mexico: the evening does not have to end at bedtime
The Deluxe Lagoon Suite at Rosewood Mayakoba has a bedroom that closes off from the sitting room, plus a second bathroom. For a family sharing a suite, those doors can change the evening. They do not establish soundproofing, but they give you a more useful question than whether the room looks large in a photograph.
Rosewood’s setting combines lagoons, mangroves and beachfront on Mexico’s Riviera Maya. Decide which part you want to wake up beside; not every suite is on the beach. Connecting Beachside Lagoon View Suites are possible subject to availability, so get the exact booking confirmed if separate bedrooms are essential.
The room can also be prepared with a requested crib, and babysitters are available for hire through the concierge or butler. Before relying on the kids’ club, ask the hotel to confirm your child’s age, toilet-training needs, dates and any fee in writing. Published age information is inconsistent enough that preschool care should not be the reason you book without that answer.
Food deserves a separate line in the budget. Standard suite rates exclude meals unless the offer says otherwise; taxes, service charges and age-dependent extra-guest charges can also change the total. A generous room and an included dinner are separate purchases here.
Finally, decide how much the holiday depends on the beach. If clear water and sea swimming are the entire dream, check recent conditions before committing. The lagoons, service and room space may still make a lovely stay, but they cannot replace the beach holiday you wanted.
Use the Deluxe Lagoon Suite description and rate conditions when asking for your quote.
Martinhal Sagres, Portugal: room for the baby’s routine and your own evening
A baby does not stop needing familiar meals because the hotel is expensive. At Martinhal Sagres in Portugal’s Algarve, staying in a house gives you more control over meals and sleep, with care for different ages when the adults want a break.
The Nursery covers 6–12 months, the Crèche 13–23 months, Raposinhos ages 2–4, and Fox Club 5–6. That matters when you are too early in family life for a club that starts at four or five. Book the sessions you want and ask what they cost. Having a nursery on the grounds does not mean care is included in every stay.
The two- and three-bedroom Ocean Houses put bedrooms downstairs, with the kitchen and living space upstairs. They also have a washing machine. You can deal with breakfast, a change of clothes or an early dinner without turning each one into a hotel-service request, then sit upstairs after the children have gone to bed.
Between naps, there is heated indoor swimming as well as outdoor pool space, and direct access from the grounds to public Martinhal Beach. The Village Pool has both indoor and outdoor sections. The Oasis Pool is adults-only, so a house beside it does not put a family swimming pool outside your door. These distinctions matter more than the headline pool count; if a particular water temperature is essential, get a current answer for the pool and week you will use.
Allow about 90 minutes by road from Faro Airport, after you have collected your bags. The resort arranges private transfers with child seats, priced separately; specify the seats and luggage you need in the booking. For a short stay with a baby, that final drive deserves as much thought as the flight.
The houses are spread around the grounds. Use the resort map to weigh the walk to the beach against the walk to the Village Square, where meals and play can become part of the same outing. A sea view is less useful if the journey back for every forgotten sun hat wears everyone down.
Hotel-room rates include breakfast; house and villa meal plans depend on the offer. Choose Martinhal for the freedom to handle a small child's routine in your own space, with care when you want it. Choose Ikos instead if having the family’s meals included matters more than having your own kitchen.
Compare the Ocean Houses with the age-specific clubs.

Ikos Dassia, Corfu: a beach week with meals already accounted for
At Ikos Dassia on Corfu, the appeal is an all-inclusive beach holiday with fewer meal-by-meal spending decisions. Its Dine Out program includes meals at selected local restaurants. You can leave the resort for dinner while keeping that meal within the package’s terms.
The childcare distinction is straightforward: Heroes Kids Club is included for ages 4–12; the crèche starts at six months and costs extra. With a baby and a school-age child, you need two kinds of care in the quote. Book the sessions you are counting on rather than assuming that an included club means unlimited places.
Just4Teens offers activities for ages 12 and up, but ask for the program for your week. An age range cannot tell a teenager whether there will be activities they want to join or peers they hope to meet. Let them take part in that conversation before announcing that their holiday entertainment is settled.
For a larger family, the Deluxe Two Bedroom Suite lists up to six guests. Confirm the adult-and-child mix and exact beds, since a capacity number does not describe how everyone will sleep.
This is a seasonal resort, with its next published opening on March 25, 2027. Plan it as a Mediterranean season trip, not a winter-sun escape, and confirm the opening and services offered for your dates.
An all-inclusive week is most convincing when you want to spend much of it enjoying what you have paid for. If you plan to leave after breakfast every day and return late, compare a simpler base before paying for meals and pools you will barely use.
Check Ikos Dassia’s family facilities and published seasonal offers. For more resort comparisons, see all-inclusive holidays with children.

Soneva Fushi, Maldives: an island holiday worth leaving time for
Soneva Fushi occupies Kunfunadhoo island in the Maldives’ Baa Atoll. The journey continues after Malé, by seaplane or by a domestic flight to Dharavandhoo followed by a speedboat. Treat that final leg as part of the booking, with the flight connections, luggage and transfer charges explained before you pay.
Once the travel is arranged, the attraction is time to settle into island life. A spacious villa gives everyone room to retreat, while The Den welcomes children and teenagers aged 4–17, with admission included. Ask about the activities your children want, any extras and the program for your dates; included access should not be read as every activity or all childcare at no charge.
Babysitting can be arranged through the resort. For a child younger than four, agree on the care and cost rather than assuming the stay includes it. A teenager’s needs are different again: a wide age range does not promise a separate group of teenagers throughout the year.
Study the named villa, too. Villa 45 has two bedrooms on different floors, a private pool and direct beach access. Older children may enjoy that space, while parents of a small child may want the bedrooms closer together. Ask about stairs, pool access and beds; floor space alone cannot tell you how the villa will work.
Breakfast is included; half board adds dinner, and full board adds lunch as well. Confirm restaurant choices, drinks and other exclusions in your offer. Allow room in the itinerary for settling in, especially if jet lag with children will affect the first days.
Begin with Soneva Fushi’s villa choices and its arrival arrangements.
Morukuru Family Madikwe, South Africa: a safari arranged around your household
A private safari vehicle changes the conversation about a family outing. You can discuss the day with your guide around your own children’s interests and stamina, rather than beginning with the needs of an unrelated group.
At Morukuru Family Madikwe, each of the three houses comes with a private vehicle, guide and tracker. A chef, butler, host and housekeeping support the stay, and meals, snacks, soft drinks, house wines and local spirits are included. The luxury here is a house and team devoted to the holiday your party is taking together.
Children of all ages may join the private game drives. That is a rule for Morukuru’s private drives, not every safari lodge or every activity. The included private bush walks are for ages 16 and up. Discuss the actual drives with the team rather than taking all-age access as a promise that every outing will be enjoyable for every child.
Choose the house carefully. River House has three en-suite bedrooms plus a children’s room, but ask the booking team to confirm every bed and who can share the house. Owner’s House, River House and Farm House should not be treated as interchangeable rooms with different names.
Get the childcare details in writing, too. House staff and a qualified sitter booked for agreed hours are different arrangements; ask who will be responsible for the children, when and at what cost. Transfers within Madikwe are included, while flights and road transport to the reserve are extra.
Arrange a detailed call with the team before paying a deposit. Choose it because your family wants a safari together and the house arrangements are clear, without attaching the whole holiday’s success to one particular animal sighting.
Use Morukuru’s family travel information to start that discussion.
Will you spend the week shushing the kids?
Dedicated family pools and restaurants with space for children to play are more useful signs than a promise that children are welcome. Martinhal’s restaurants have children’s menus, baby food and play areas; Hualalai has the Sea Shell family pool, and Montage has the Inn Family Pool. Those are places to build the day around when you want a family holiday with good service.
A resort can also have quiet spaces for adults, as Martinhal’s Oasis Pool shows. Establish which pool and restaurants you would actually use, especially if the photographs that persuaded you show the quietest corners. You should not need the children to become different people for the holiday to be enjoyable.
If your child has no interest in a club, leave it out of the value calculation. Put more weight on a meal you can enjoy together, a shared outing and room to spread out afterward. Morukuru’s chef and private house give a larger party privacy at meals. A kitchen in a Montage or Martinhal house also gives you space, but somebody still has to decide who will cook.
Compare the family bill, not the room rate
Ask for the total for your dates, exact room and every traveler’s age. Luxury family vacation packages can include very different things, so the smallest nightly number may not describe the least expensive holiday.
At Rosewood Mayakoba, standard suite rates leave meals outside the price. The Ranch at Rock Creek includes meals and scheduled activities but adds a Ranch Fee and charges for extra care and spa treatments. Ikos includes its school-age club but charges for the crèche. Those differences matter before anyone orders a drink.
A hotel enquiry you can copy
Send the same request to your two preferred properties, replacing the brackets with your details:
We are [number] adults traveling with children aged [ages] for [dates]. Please quote the exact room or house and show the beds, separate bedrooms and bathrooms. Please confirm that our whole party may stay in it.
Please include meals for every guest, with restaurant and drink exclusions, and the childcare sessions we can reserve. We would also like [shared activity or other priority]. Please itemize transfers, taxes and mandatory fees, and identify anything else charged separately.
Please include the cancellation terms. If connecting rooms, a particular house location or another feature is only a request, rather than confirmed with the booking, please say so.
Add your own flights and any overnight stop to both replies. Then compare the total for the holiday you would actually take, including the meals, care and outings each offer leaves out.
Write down the extras you would choose even without a package. If you want one shared outing and most afternoons by the pool, price that holiday. If guided activities are the reason for going, include the ones your family can actually take. The exercise becomes more useful when it describes your week rather than an imaginary family determined to use everything.
A house deserves the same scrutiny. Decide whether you want to cook, arrange grocery delivery or eat out, and put any paid help into the quote. A kitchen can be a freedom or an unwanted job; the room description cannot decide that for you.
When the expensive hotel is the wrong purchase
A higher price cannot fix the part of the holiday you have left unresolved. You may still be sharing one sleeping space, paying for a club your child dislikes or trying to recover from a long flight in too few days.
Think about how your children are now. A child who loves organized activities at home may be eager to join a club; another may need you nearby in an unfamiliar place. Plan an enjoyable week together even if the drop-off you pictured never happens. You can then welcome adult time without making it a test the holiday has to pass.
Likewise, an excellent house does not automatically provide the beach, food or atmosphere you wanted. If one of those is the reason for going, settle it before the suite photos sway you.
There are plenty of family vacations with a smaller total bill, and the broader family destination choices may lead you toward a different kind of trip altogether. Spend more on the thing you would miss if it were absent. The most satisfying upgrade may be as modest as adults being able to finish dinner and stay awake a little longer than the children.
Questions parents ask before booking
What makes a luxury resort good for families?
A useful room layout, childcare your child can attend and activities you want to do together matter more than the luxury label. Compare the exact sleeping arrangements, meal plan and available care before choosing, and keep the journey and your family’s daily routine in the decision.
Which luxury family vacations are in the US?
Four Seasons Resort Hualalai in Hawaii combines pools, cultural activities and an included club for ages 5–12. Montage Palmetto Bluff in South Carolina offers residential space beside the May River, while The Ranch at Rock Creek in Montana includes meals and two daily activities, with an additional Ranch Fee and other extras.
Are luxury family resorts all-inclusive?
No. Rosewood Mayakoba’s standard suite rates exclude meals unless the offer says otherwise, while Ikos Dassia is all-inclusive but charges for its crèche. The Ranch at Rock Creek includes meals and scheduled activities but adds a Ranch Fee; extra babysitting and spa treatments cost more.
Which luxury resorts offer care for babies and toddlers?
Martinhal Sagres offers baby care from six months, with fees or inclusions dependent on the booking. Ikos Dassia’s paid crèche also starts at six months and operates within the resort’s season. Hualalai’s standard complimentary kids’ club begins at five, so younger children need separately arranged care.
Is a suite or connecting rooms better for a family?
Compare the actual doors, beds, bathrooms and permitted guest mix. A suite with a closable bedroom can provide separation, while connecting rooms may give everyone more space; confirm the connection as part of the booking rather than relying on a request subject to availability.
How much does a luxury family vacation cost?
There is no single useful price without dates, a departure point, the children’s ages and an exact room. Compare complete quotes covering accommodation, travel, meals, childcare, activities and taxes or fees, then check the cancellation terms before paying.
