What age is good for the Nutcracker?
Most kids are ready for a full Nutcracker at about 4 or 5. A full show runs about two hours. At that age, most kids can sit through the first act, and that's where the whole story happens.
Younger kids can go too. Pick a short kids' version, or go to a full show and plan to leave at the break. Your little one will still have seen the party, the battle and the snow.
Check the age rule before you buy. It's different at every theater. New York City Ballet and Colorado Ballet say ages 5 and up. Miami City Ballet says 4 and up. Orlando Ballet's theater allows ages 2 and up. A few theaters need a ticket for every person, babies too.
The rule only tells you who can come in. Whether your child will enjoy two hours in a dark theater is a different question, and you know your kid best.
How long is the Nutcracker ballet?
A full Nutcracker runs about 2 hours, with one break of 15 to 25 minutes in the middle. Kids' versions run about an hour or less.

| George Balanchine's The Nutcracker (New York City Ballet) | New York | About 2 hours |

In most versions, Act 1 has the Christmas party, the battle with the Mouse King and the snow scene. Act 2 is the Land of Sweets, a string of short dances. If your child fades after the break, they've still seen the whole story.
Before you go: tips for a first Nutcracker
- Act 1 has the whole story. If your little one fades, leaving at the break still counts as a win.
- Pick an afternoon show and an aisle seat. Do the bathroom and a snack before the curtain goes up.
- Read the story and play the music at home first. Warn kids about the loud battle scene, so the cannon doesn't scare them.
- Let kids dress up. A party dress, a tutu or a bow tie makes the day feel special.
- Check the theater's age rule before you buy. Some don't let in kids under 4 or 5, even on a lap.
Short Christmas shows for toddlers
If your child is under 4, start small. These shows run 75 minutes or less, and many are made just for little kids. Some have puppets, some invite kids to dance or sing along, and one is made just for babies and preschoolers.

Christmas concerts, plays and musicals
The Nutcracker isn't the only holiday show in town. Here's what to know about the other big ones before you buy. We list 46 holiday concerts and 22 productions of A Christmas Carol in 17 cities, plus dozens of family musicals.
Holiday concerts and "in concert" movies
When a show says "in concert," it means a movie on a big screen while a live orchestra plays the music. There are no actors on stage. Kids who love the movie often love it, but it's not the stage musical, so check before you buy.
For the youngest kids, look for a short family concert. The Dallas Symphony has a one-hour Saturday morning show, and the Boston Pops have a kids' matinee.

A Christmas Carol
A Christmas Carol is a ghost story at heart, with rattling chains, thunder and a hooded ghost. Many theaters set an age of 5 or 6 and up, and some don't let younger kids in at all. Most families find it works best from about age 6 to 8.
For younger kids, try the one-hour kids' version at Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia, or a Muppet version.

Buying Nutcracker and Christmas show tickets
Buy from the theater's own site or box office. Every show on this page links to its official site. Some also link to Ticketmaster, where that's how the show is sold.
Be careful with other resale sites that show up in search results. Some look official but charge far more, and some tickets turn out to be fake.

Where can I see the Nutcracker ballet near me?
Find your city in the Nutcracker list on this page. We cover 58 Nutcrackers in 26 US cities for 2026, from big ballet companies with a full orchestra to short kids' versions. Each one links to its official site for dates and tickets.
What age is good to see The Nutcracker?
About 4 or 5 for a full Nutcracker. It runs about two hours, and most kids that age can sit through the first act, which tells the whole story.
Under 4, pick a short kids' version, or plan to leave at the break. Always check the theater's age rule before you buy. Some say 5 and up, and others welcome all ages.
How long is the Nutcracker ballet?
A full Nutcracker runs about 2 hours, with one break of 15 to 25 minutes. Short kids' versions run about an hour or less. Check the run time on your show's official site, because it changes from one company to the next.
What should kids wear to the Nutcracker?
Whatever feels special and still comfy. Many kids love to dress up in a party dress, a tutu, or a vest and bow tie. Bring a warm coat that fits under the seat, since it's cold outside and warm inside. Comfy shoes help on the walk from the car.
Can babies and toddlers go to the Nutcracker?
It depends on the theater. Some sell lap tickets for babies. Some need a ticket for every person, and some don't let young kids in at all. For example, Ballet San Antonio needs a ticket for everyone, babies included. Miami's Arts Ballet Theatre sells lap tickets for babies 12 months and under at the box office on the day. For toddlers, a short kids' version is the easiest start.
Are there sensory-friendly Nutcracker shows?
Yes. 11 of the Nutcrackers on this page have a sensory-friendly or relaxed show, with softer lights and sound. They include Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle, Colorado Ballet in Denver, San Francisco Ballet, Los Angeles Ballet and Philadelphia Ballet. See the full list on this page for dates.
How long is the Rockettes Christmas show?
About 90 minutes, with no break. That's shorter than most Nutcrackers, which makes it a good pick for younger kids. Plan a bathroom stop before it starts.
